Dealer History

Lloyd Motor Group is one of the best-known independent automotive groups in the UK. It was founded in 1976 with only one BMW retail centre in Cockermouth, Cumbria. From the humble beginnings to a leading automotive giant, Lloyd Motor Group has had a rapid development as a company.

The Group is famous for its impressive customer service and technical expertise, which additionally improves its reputation. Lloyd Motor Group represents numerous top-class brands, including BMW, Jaguar, MINI, Volvo, Honda, Land Rover and Kia. The company also represents BMW and Honda Motorcycles, which draws in an even wider customer base.

After a successful start in Cockermouth in 1976, the company started to develop at a rapid pace, and only one year later, it got the Volvo franchise. In 1986, Lloyd Motor Group added a new dealership to its BMW portfolio, but this time in Carlisle. Two years later, it also took over the Honda franchise in the same place.

In 1994, it was time to expand again and branch out to reach another type of customer, such as large families, or those seeking off-road adventurers. The company decided to open a Land Rover dealership in Rosehill, Carlisle and later, a Rover dealership in the same location.

In 1996, Lloyd Motor Group welcomed the Volvo franchise to its Carlisle portfolio, adding yet another brand to its name.

In 1998, the company set its sights on Newcastle and acquired Fawdington Ltd. which became Lloyd Motors Newcastle.

In 2003, the company moved BMW from Kingston Roadway to Gearshill Road, leaving room for MINI to take over the old site in Carlisle. In the same year, the Group also opened Honda Motorcycles in Carlisle, which made the company even more well known.

2005 saw the Group add Jaguar to its portfolio with the acquisition of Carlisle Gilligan Jaguar which then became Lloyd Jaguar.

In 2006, the company added the Saab franchise to its portfolio in Cumbria.

2007 was another big year for their BMW acquisition. Lloyd Motor Group acquired Prestons BMW and MINI dealership and turned them into Lloyd BMW and Lloyd MINI the same year.

A couple of years later, in 2010, the company acquired Derek Woodman, turning the dealerships into Lloyd BMW and MINI Blackpool.

In 2011, the company turned Croall Bruson into Lloyd Land Rover Kelso, while in 2015 it acquired Bateman in Lindale, and transformed it to Lloyd BMW. 2015 was also marked by the opening of the used car retailer in Blackpool, Lloyd Premium Cars.

2016 was the year when Ripon Land Rover in North Yorkshire was purchased by the Group and became Lloyd Land Rover Ripon.

In 2018, they opened Lloyd Used Car Centre in Carlisle.

In 2019, Lloyd Motor Group added the Kia franchise to its Carlisle portfolio.
